This painting begins & ends with a wound.
A section of the canvas has been stripped away, surgically removed. What remains is absence. And behind that absence, another lonely surface waits.
An elephant’s eye peers through the tear.
It does not blink. It does not ask permission. It simply watches.
The heavily layered texture surrounding the opening feels almost geological — scraped, buried, built up, broken down. The surface tells the story of concealment. The void tells the story of exposure.
On the side of the piece, the words read:
“The truth will set you free, but not until it is done with you.”
This work isn’t about revelation as relief. It’s about revelation as reckoning.
The Watcher confronts the tension between what we present and what waits underneath. The polished surface versus the raw interior. The story we tell versus the truth that eventually tears through it.
The eye does not judge. It does not comfort. It only witnesses.
And once something is seen, it cannot be unseen.
